Just by the way Ellie acted the man knew exactly what was happening. That means that this was expected but everyone convinced themselves that this would not happen. The man, in his own way was scared by the way he moved. This quote also shows that for some in was unbelievable because of the way Ellie reacted. He was frightened and what he was saying was unbelievable to even him.
